Venice Marco Polo Airport is located on the mainland 8.0 kilometres; 4.9 miles north of the city in the small frazione of Tessera.
Due to the importance of Venice as a leisure destination it features flights to European metropolitan areas as well as some partly seasonal long-haul routes to the United States and the Middle East.
On 2014 8,475,188 passengers passed through the airport.
A modern terminal was opened in 2002, but it is already at full capacity.
It handles all scheduled and charter flights, including some long-haul flight to North America, the Middle East, and Asia.
There is another airport located in the Venice area, Treviso Airport which is sometimes labelled as Venice-Treviso and mostly serves low-cost airlines.
Treviso Canova Airport is located 3.0 km; 1.8 mi west-southwest of and approximately 31 km (19 mi) away from the city of Venice. It is mainly used by low-cost airlines.
Some airlines refer to the airport as “Venice-Treviso” or similar despite its actual name – however, the main international airport of Venice is Venice Marco Polo Airport .
The new terminal was opened in 2007. It was named after Antonio Canova a famous Italian sculptor.
The Venice Airport System, that includes Venice and Treviso, registered over 10.7 million passengers in year 2014, confirming its position of third italian system after Rome and Milan.
From Venice Airport you can reach Venice City by land tsxo or by watertaxi along the lagoon , from Treviso Airport only by land up to the car terminal of Venice Piazzale Roma.
